The Ottoman Empire has an important place among the world civilisations with its rich culture, hosting many ethnic elements and history. This state stood out not only with its political and military achievements but also with the colourful and diverse aspects of daily life. Ottoman entertainment culture is an important element that completes the social fabric of the state. Ottoman society was a mosaic of different ethnic groups, religious beliefs and cultural heritage. This diversity also enriched and diversified the understanding of entertainment. Entertainment activities, in which people from almost all walks of life participated in a wide area extending from the palaces to the neighbourhoods where the people lived, strengthened the social ties of the Ottoman society. So far, important studies have been carried out on the entertainment culture of the sultan representing the palace and the privileged elite class. The number of studies on Istanbul’s taverns, drinking culture and the entertainment of ordinary people is increasing day by day. This article aims to draw attention to a different point and seeks an answer to the question “Who were those who disturbed the peace of the city after having fun in the taverns in the Galata-Pera neighbourhood called İşrethâne-i dünya (World tavern)?”. One of the answers to this question is the soldiers of the embassy entourage ferry. In this research, firstly, Ottoman taverns and drinking culture are emphasised. Subsequently, the study focuses on the public order incidents caused by the soldiers of the embassy entourage ferries, who disrupted the entertainment culture and peace of Istanbul (Galata-Pera) in the second half of the 19th century until the Constitutional Monarchy II period.
