Özet

Background: Examining the factors affecting life satisfaction among older adults in Türkiye is crucial for both scientific inquiry and social policy development. Population ageing in Türkiye has accelerated in recent years, and the increasing proportion of individuals aged 65 and over has begun to significantly reshape the demographic structure. Life satisfaction is a fundamental public health indicator that predicts disease development, psychosocial health status, mortality risk, and healthcare utilisation. Dynamics unique to Türkiye, such as the transformation of family structures and the growing tendency to live alone, necessitate a comprehensive examination of the factors affecting life satisfaction among older adults. Methods: The dataset used in this study is the microdata from the Türkiye Older Adults Profile Survey, conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute and nationally representative. A total of 10,348 individuals aged 65 years and over were included in the study. The dependent variable of the study is the life satisfaction status. To identify the socio-demographic, health status and functionality, social support and living arrangement, psychosocial well-being, and social exclusion factors affecting life satisfaction among older adults, the binary logit regression method was employed. Results: Key determinants such as health, social support, and economic conditions play a significant role in shaping life satisfaction among older adults. The findings indicate that positive physical and mental health enhance life satisfaction, whereas loneliness, social isolation, exposure to violence, and exclusion have adverse effects. Furthermore, satisfaction with life and religious beliefs contribute positively, and attitudes toward ageing and acceptance of life stages also influence overall satisfaction. Conclusions: In addition to reflecting individual well-being, life satisfaction can be improved through policy interventions aimed at expanding social support systems, facilitating access to healthcare services and home care, promoting social participation, and developing age-friendly environments. Such interventions may help reduce issues such as loneliness, exclusion, and violence, thereby improving the quality of life of older adults.
