PREFACE
Biotechnology is basically the deciphering and use of biological information. It is a multidisciplinary branch of science that has relations in many disciplines such as biology, microbiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, chemistry, and environmental engineering. Biotechnology is a ancient discipline, but it is evolving rapidly and has numerous applications in our daily life, ranging from pharmaceutical discovery to food production and waste disposal.
Biotechnology is the controlled and deliberate manipulation of biological systems (live cells or cell components) in order to effectively produce or process useful products. Because living organisms possess such a diverse range of biological capabilities, selecting appropriate species allows for the production of a large range of compounds, many of which are beneficial to humans as food, fuel, and medicines. Biotechnology, which is heavily dependent on knowledge and technology, plays an important role in promoting innovation, productivity, and economic growth in traditional sectors, as well as contributing to the improvement of the population's quality of life and environmental protection on various levels.
This new book has been enriched with new chapters to complement our first edited book, "Biotechnology in Action: Unveiling Nature's Potential". Therefore, the motivation to compile a comprehensive book on advances in biotechnology stemmed from the increasing awareness of recent developments in cell biology, microbiology, biochemistry, and bioengineering that have accelerated the growth of biotechnology. This book covers diverse aspects of biotechnology, including microbial biopesticides, biological insect control, microbial fermentation, the role of probiotics in biotechnology, biofuel production, plastic biodegradation, phytoremediation, biosorption, antioxidant, thermophilic, and industrial enzyme applications, drug delivery systems, biomaterials, and the biotechnological applications of chitin, bacteriophages, and bryophytes.
This book will serve as a valuable resource for microbial, animal, and plant biotechnologists, as well as biochemists, molecular biologists, pharmacologists, agricultural and environmental engineers. It is also intended for university students and researchers in the biological sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. We are confident that this book will not only contribute to scientific knowledge but also engage the interest of the general public.
This book represents the collective efforts of numerous researchers and scientists, each advancing biotechnology within their respective fields. We extend our sincere gratitude to all contributing authors for their valuable contributions.
