In this study, a promising catalyst (sugar industry waste catalyst) was produced and biodiesel was synthesized by transesterification of sunflower oil using this catalyst. The sugar industry waste catalyst was characterized by XRD, BET, TGA, and SEM analysis. Optimum reaction conditions were also determined. Under the optimum reaction conditions (5 wt% catalyst amount and 15:1 methanol to oil molar ratio at 60 degrees C for 2 h), the highest biodiesel yield of 87.64% was obtained. Moreover, the fuel properties of the biodiesel obtained under these conditions met the requirements of both EN 14,214 and ASTM D 6751 standards. Reusability tests showed that the FAME yield was 80% after 3 run cycles. The experimental results indicated that the catalyst-related production cost of biodiesel might be reduced by using the catalyst prepared from sugar industry waste.
