Abstract
This book presents a comprehensive environmental investigation of Lake Van, the world’s largest soda lake, focusing on heavy metal dynamics and radioecological risks. A total of 54 water and sediment samples collected from 20 stations were analyzed using ICP-OES and EDXRF techniques to determine the distribution of major, trace, and radioactive elements. The findings reveal significant accumulation of heavy metals and uranium in sediments, influenced by both natural geological processes and anthropogenic sources such as domestic waste, agriculture, industry, and atmospheric deposition. The study also highlights potential radiological risks associated with the nearby Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant. With its unique alkaline chemistry, endemic species, and complex geochemical structure, Lake Van serves as a critical natural laboratory. The results emphasize the need for continuous monitoring and effective environmental protection strategies to preserve the lake’s ecological integrity.
