A new probe, called PTE, has been developed for detecting Hg2+ using a phenothiazine (PTE) unit with a dithioacetal group as the response unit. The synthesis of PTE was conducted initially, followed by studying its interactions with a variety of ions using UV-Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy in real water samples. Based on the UV-Vis and fluorescence studies, it was discovered that PTE exhibited turn-on sensor properties against Hg2+ ions. Additionally, the LOD value for PTE/Hg2+ was determined to be 102 nM. Moreover, the study also examined the visual color changes of PTE on filter paper and TLC test strips. The results indicated that PTE can be effectively used in mercury-containing solutions, as it produces fast color and spectroscopic changes.
