Özet

The increasing use of ionizing radiation in medical, industrial, and nuclear applications requires effective shielding materials that provide strong attenuation while reducing reliance on toxic heavy metals such as lead. This work examines bismuth borosilicate glasses with densities from 4.824 to 5.597 g/cm³ for gamma shielding. The LAC values reached 10.916 cm⁻¹ at 0.081 MeV for Bi48, while decreasing with increasing energy. Radiation protection efficiency showed maximum attenuation at low energies, gradually declining across the studied range. The experimental MAC values varied from 1.812 to 0.212 cm²/g depending on photon energy and composition. Comparative analysis revealed superior attenuation (0.238–0.252 cm²/g) over reported systems (0.199–0.204 cm²/g). Increasing Bi₂O₃ content enhanced shielding performance significantly. Among all compositions, Bi48 exhibited the highest attenuation capability and is identified as the optimal glass for radiation protection applications.
