The protective role of selenium against the genotoxicity induced by aflatoxin B-1 (AFB(1)) was studied in root cells of crop plants. Experimental evidences showed that chromosomal aberrations can be induced by all treated AFB(1) doses (0.1, 0.2 and 0.4 ppm). On the other hand, the frequencies of chromosomal aberration can be effectively decreased by treatment with sodium selenite (Na2SeO3, 0.08, 8 and 800 ppm) together with AFB(1). These results suggest that selenium could effectively inhibit AFB(1) induced chromosomal aberration which may be partially responsible for its mutagenic effect. Besides, the protective role of selenium against aflatoxin B, induced chromosomal aberrations is correlated with its concentrations.
