Özet:
The study aimed to determine the technical
efficiency and the factors effecting to efficiency of dairy buffalo farms. The
data of the study were collected from 65 buffalo farms selected by using whole counting method in Igdir province, Turkey. Technical efficiency
and the factors affecting to efficiency score were used by Data envelopment
analysis (DEA) method and Tobit Model.
According to the research findings, number of buffaloes, number of
milking buffaloes and total milk productions of buffalo farms were determined
11,04 head, 8,89 head and 8 tons, respectively. The average cost of buffalo
milk production per liter was calculated as 5,17 TL/lt in overall farms, 3,79
TL/lt in efficiency farms and 7,24 TL/lt in inefficient farms. The average
price/cost ratio of all farms, efficiency and inefficiency farms were found to
be 1,56, 2,11 and 1,11, respectively. According to the DEA, average technical
efficiency scores of dairy farms was 0.84. This shows the possibility of
increasing average output by about 0.16 without the use of additional inputs. The
rations of efficient and inefficient farms were found 41,5% and 58,5%,
respectively. Tobit Model results show that age, main profession as farmer,
forage crop land and number of animal unit had statistically positive effects. In order to increase the efficiency of buffalo farms in the region, the
farmers should manage their inputs efficiently by providing efficient extension
services. In addition, in order to increase the size of farms and
sustainability of buffalo farms, the government should be increasing the amount
of support given to the farmers.
