Abstract:

Purpose: Microscopic and complex interactions occur between surfaces used in engineering applications, in contact with each other or sliding relative to each other or sliding relative to each other. These interactions, called friction and wear, cause adverse effect on the tribological properties of materials. In order to eliminate these negative situations on materials, different surface treatments are applied. When we look at these processes, one of the methods that has been used especially in recent years is the creation of texture on the surface of the material. In this study, it is aimed to improve the tribological performance of this material in different friction and wear conditions by creating a texture with different geometric properties on the surface of AISI 316L stainless steel, which is used in many different industrial applications, especially in aerospace and biomedical applications. Method: By using Selective Laser Melting (SLM) method, samples with different surface textures such as square, rhombus, hexagon and circle were produced using AISI 316L stainless steel powder. The produced samples were subjected to friction and wear tests under different ambient conditions (dry, salt water and oil). XRD, SEM and microhardness device were used to examine the structural, morphological and mechanical properties of the samples. Findings: While the best tribological performance was obtained thanks to the additional hydrodynamic pressure occurring in the experiments performed in oil and brine environment, the best tribological performance was observed in oil, salt water and dry environments, respectively. At the same time, the sample with circle texture exhibited the best tribological behavior due to the presence of sharp corners in hexagon, rhombus, and square textures. Results: By applying different surface texture treatments on AISI 316L stainless steel, improvements have been achieved on its tribological properties under different ambient conditions. In addition, the sample with the circular surface texture exhibited the best performance under all friction and wear conditions.
