Abstract:

ABSTRACT Stigmatization in Bipolar Affective Disorder: A Qualitative Study Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the stigmatization experiences of patients diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder. Material and Method: The research was conducted in Van Health Sciences University Training and Research Hospital between June 2023 and September 2024 in a qualitative research type using a phenomenological research design. The study was conducted with 13 participants selected by purposive sampling method. Data were collected using "Personal Information Form" and "Semi-structured Interview Form". The data were analyzed using thematic analysis and MAXQDA software. Results: In the study, 4 main themes were identified in line with patient statements: institutional stigma, public stigma, self-stigmatization and coping with stigmatization. The theme of institutional stigma includes two sub-themes: health professionals stigma and other institutional professionals stigma. The theme of public stigma consists of two sub-themes: family stigma and other individuals stigma. Conclusion: It was found that individuals diagnosed with Bipolar Affective Disorder are intensively stigmatised by their families, society and patients stigmatise themselves; family support and information are important to cope with stigmatisation, patients hide their illness and isolate themselves. It is recommended to develop training and support programmes for individuals to strengthen coping strategies against stigma. Key Words: Bipolar affective disorder, psychiatric nursing, stigmatization
