Abstract:Purpose: The main purpose of this research is to examine the environmental literacy levels of geography teacher candidates according to various variables and to determine their views on the environment. Method: Embedded design, one of the mixed research methods in which quantitative and qualitative research methods are used together, was used in the research. The participants of the study consist of 94 second grade and 96 fourth grade students studying in seven geography teaching departments in Turkey in the 2021-2022 academic year. As a data collection tool, Environmental Literacy Scale was used to determine the environmental literacy levels of the students, and a semi-structured interview form was used to determine the students' views on the environment. In the analysis of the data obtained from the Environmental Literacy Scale, one-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test; Content analysis was used in the analysis of the data obtained from the semi-structured interview form. Findings: According to the findings, it was found that the pre-service geography teachers had medium level environmental literacy skills and there was no significant difference between the environmental literacy levels of the candidates and the variables of gender, age, mother and father education level, and the place where they lived before starting university. It has been determined that there is a significant difference between the variable of receiving education and the university they attend. In addition, it was determined that the participants had opinions supporting the quantitative findings. Conclusions: As a result of the research, it was determined that the environmental literacy skills of the geography teacher candidates were at a moderate level. The fact that the pre-service geography teachers take environmental courses and the universities they attend the geography teaching undergraduate program affect their environmental literacy skills. In addition, the participants find the efforts to protect the environment insufficient. Keywords: Geography, environment, environmental literacy, pre-service teacher, opinion
