Abstract:The main aim of this thesis is to examine the documentary photography in the context of ideas and concepts improved by Walter Benjamin and investigate how the expectation, assumption and foresight about photograph taken place by Walter Benjamin. The base of study involves in essay about photograph of Benjamin, documentary photography, its sub-branch social documentary photography and photograph studies in perspective of photographic approach. The method used in this study is literature review. All data were collected by Walter Benjamin's own texts, studies and publication about documentary photography. When we look at the historical development of documentary photography, we can see that cameras become smaller and easy to take instant photos, number of pictorials increase and subtitles of this pictorials become the main part of documentary photography. We can say that documentary photographers have same characteristics with "Functional" writers and story-tellers and our information about visual unconscious mind increase thanks to their witness and our perception world rises. In addition, we can mention that documentary photography is used for political aims, to answer the approach to political esthetic via politization, to disclose crime and criminals, to remove bad aura. Actually, it is seen that all of them are result of lack of good aura. Most of the social changes created by social documentary photography studies are small and local, in other words micro-size changes. But we can meet some macro-size changes at least. However, it is too hard to say that revolutionary subject occurs like Benjamin's dream.
