Biography

Prof. Dr. Turgay Şişman was born in 1976 in Yusufeli, Artvin (Turkey). He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in the same district and graduated as the top student of his class from the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science and Letters, Atatürk University, in 1999. The same year, he was appointed as a primary school teacher in Koşapınar Village, Aşkale District. In 2000, he began working as a Research Assistant in the Department of Molecular Biology, Faculty of Science and Letters, Atatürk University.

He received his M.Sc. degree in 2004 with a thesis entitled “Clastogenic Effects of Aflatoxin B1 on Polytene Chromosomes of Drosophila melanogaster”, and completed his Ph.D. in 2007 with a dissertation entitled “Effects of Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compounds on the Development of Danio rerio (Zebrafish)”. In the same year, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Biology, Faculty of Science, Atatürk University.

He is one of the founding faculty members of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, established in 2009 within the Faculty of Science. In 2010, he served as co-chair of the 1st National Palandöken Toxicology Symposium held in Erzurum with the participation of the Turkish Society of Toxicology. He received the title of Associate Professor in 2012 in the field of Developmental Biology and Aquatic Toxicology.

In 2017, he was promoted to Professor in the Department of General Biology, and in 2022, he was appointed as a Professor in the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Division of Genetics, at the same faculty, where he currently continues his academic work.

His research interests include Toxicology, Developmental Biology, Ecotoxicology, Zebrafish Development, Animal Histology, and Histopathology. Prof. Şişman has authored a total of 67 scientific publications, including 41 articles indexed in SCI/SCIE. He has supervised 20 theses (4 Ph.D. and 16 M.Sc.) and has been involved in 34 research projects with 2 inyernational research project (SESAME, Jordan).

Throughout his career, Prof. Şişman has held various administrative positions such as Vice Head of Department, Head of Division, Vice Dean, Dean, Member of the Faculty Board, and University Senate Member. He is married and the father of three children.
