Effects of cooperative learning methods on social studies undergraduate students' achievement in political science

Özet

In order for Social Studies to perform its function properly, instructional strategies in Social Studies must be centered on methods of facts that can be retrieved when a student hears his name called by the teacher seeking the truth which include those of problems detecting, problem solving, learning by experimenting and discovery learning. Therefore, it's clear that new methods and techniques are needed to provide a much better understanding the subject of social studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Jigsaw, Group Investigation and Reading-Writing-Presenting method in cooperative learning on students' comprehension of political science lesson. This research included 150 second-year undergraduate students from four classes of a political science course taught by the researcher in a faculty of education in a university in the 2011-2012 academic years. For this research, three experimental groups (E(1), E(2), and E(3)) were selected. The E(1) group (n=45) was taught using Jigsaw Cooperative Learning, the E(2) group (n=55) was taught through Reading-Writing-Presenting cooperative learning, and the E(3) group (n=50) was taught using Group Investigation Cooperative Learning over five weeks. The data was collected through the Academic Achievement Test (AAT), Thinking Styles Inventory (TSI) and Democratic Attitude Scale (DAS).The data were analyzed by quantitative. The results obtained from the data show that, the methods used in cooperative learning model have an equal effect on students' academic achievements, thinking styles and democratic attitude. © Sila Science.
