Biography

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şevki Özer Akçay

He was born in 1982 in Erzurum. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Erzurum. In 2007, he earned his undergraduate degree from Atatürk University's Kazım Karabekir Faculty of Education, Department of Music Education. In 2011, he completed his master’s degree at Atatürk University’s Institute of Educational Sciences with his thesis titled “Developing a Performance Scale for Guitar Education.” In 2015, he earned his doctorate from Gazi University’s Institute of Educational Sciences with his thesis titled “The Effect of the Writing Practice Method on Developing Technical Skills in Guitar Education.”

He conducts national and international studies in the fields of musicology, the relationship between music and the brain, performance evaluation and assessment, music sociology, music education, guitar education, and instrumental performance. His academic activities include supervising numerous undergraduate and graduate theses, serving as an editor and reviewer for national and international scientific journals, participating as an examiner on juries, and serving as a member of organizing/scientific committees in various scientific meetings (such as symposia). He has also acted as a project leader and researcher in scientific research projects.

At the undergraduate level, he teaches courses such as individual instrument (guitar), music culture, scientific research methods, music sociology, and music psychology. At the graduate level, he offers courses on music and music education policies in Turkey; cognitive approaches, methods, and techniques in music research; interpretation and performance (guitar); and science, education, and ethics. He has performed as a soloist/guitarist in various concerts, recitals, and musical events. Additionally, he has composed original music for plays in private theaters and for advertisement/promotion films. He has arranged pieces from the repertoire of traditional Turkish music for the guitar.
